iProv Summer Fellowship

Cohort-based community-engaged learning, career and internships in Rhode Island.

The SPRINT-iProv Summer Fellowship provides undergraduate students with a stipend (and a Summer Earnings Waiver for qualifying students) to engage in 8-10-week internships with nonprofit organizations based in Rhode Island.

iProv is a joint project of the Swearer Center and the Brown Center for Career Exploration. SPRINT (Summer/Semester Projects for Research, Internship, Teaching) serves as the umbrella application for funded experiential learning opportunities, including iProv, BrownConnect LINKs, and other awards.

  • Provide a valuable internship experience that, when coupled with sequential training, can contribute to the educational experience of students and encourage them to make connections between their academic work and their career aspirations.
  • Create a learning community of students engaged in thinking about the nature of nonprofit work, the dynamics of community change, connections and overlaps between academic and community work, and active citizenship.
  • Enhance the capacity of nonprofit community organizations to utilize student interns effectively.
  • Strengthen partnerships between the Swearer Center and community organizations and expand Brown’s support of community organizations and the City of Providence. If accepted, students are guaranteed a summer internship placement.
  • iProv is a fellowship; in addition to an internship, students participate in regular workshops and meetings with other fellows.

The iProv Summer Fellows may satisfy the practicum requirement for students participating in the Engaged Scholarship Certificate.

Program Requirements

Students are part of a structured and supportive cohort that meets regularly to build skills and competencies for community engagement. iProv workshops will focus on topics such as critical reflection, cultural humility, civic engagement and effective leadership and action.

  • Fellows participate in and complete an eight—to ten-week summer internship, which runs from early June through early August.
  • Fellows live in RI (either on campus or off campus) during the duration of their summer iProv Fellowship.
  • Fellows are matched with a community partner organization and internship. The program facilitators facilitate this match-making process with input from both student applicants and community-partner employers.
  • Fellows attend a program recipient orientation before the start of the program.
  • Fellows participate in weekly learning seminars throughout the program.
  • Fellows submit a written reflection about the iProv experience. This reflection is due by September 1.

Comply with all SPRINT Fellowships: Principles and Expectations.

Eligibility

Only undergraduates enrolled during the spring semester and the fall semester following the summer iProv Fellowship experience  are eligible. This includes all students regardless of citizenship and current location of study. Students on a leave of absence from Brown, either in the semester they are applying for or in the period when they will receive the funding, are not eligible.

Since the funding for fellowships is finite, students who previously received a SPRINT award remain eligible to apply to SPRINT Fellowships, but priority will be given to students who have not previously received SPRINT summer awards.

Funding

The base stipend for domestic SPRINT Awards is $2,500. In addition, students with Brown financial aid will automatically receive an additional Gap Award ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 based on their Parent Contribution/Responsibility as determined by the Office of Financial Aid, for a total award of $4,500 - $5,500.

Apply

The iProv Fellowship application opens every December in Ufunds.
