Graduate Proctorship in Community Engagement Scholarship

Open to doctoral students with a focus on social science research related to community engagement, higher education, university-community partnerships, assessment, organizational change and/or professional networks and field-building.

This one-year renewable fellowship is available for doctoral students at least in their third year of studies during the fellowship period.

The fellowship aims to involve graduate doctoral students in research on community engagement in higher education. Graduate fellows will contribute to the ongoing research and assessment agenda of the Swearer Center. Applications are currently closed. Responsibilities and Expected Hours

The fellow serves as a researcher along with a team led by the Swearer Center’s Senior Director for Strategy and Assessment.

The fellow conducts research related to:

  • Community engagement in higher education;
  • University - Community partnerships;
  • Assessment tools for community-engaged learning and action;
  • Reciprocity, equity, and anti-racist praxis in community engagement.

Fellows will be appointed to a proctorship for the Fall and Spring, with a commitment of 20 hours per week.

Eligibility

Brown doctoral students entering their third year or later in the social sciences are invited to apply. Priority will be given to applicants with research work related to higher education or community-based research.

Funding and Award

The stipend for this fellowship is $15,904.5 per semester. If applicable, health insurance, dental insurance and coverage of the health services fee would be provided by the Graduate School.

Application Process and Submission Deadline

  • A Cover Letter (maximum 2-pages) detailing:
    • Current status as a graduate student (year, expected graduation date, competing employment or academic demands expected in the academic year of the fellowship)
    • Your interest in the position, experience working on research projects, knowledge of higher education research, interest and involvement in community and civic engagement projects
  • A current CV
  • A writing sample
  • A letter of recommendation from a Brown faculty member (preferably from your faculty advisor)
  • A short message of support from the applicant’s Director of Graduate Studies (this award is contingent on approval from your DGS)
