Community-E​ngaged ​D​epartment Program

Brown University is committed to deepening relationships across Providence and Rhode Island and strengthening the University’s ability to contribute to positive community impact. Community-engaged research, teaching and partnerships are an important part of that commitment, bringing academic expertise into conversation with communities' knowledge, priorities and experiences.

Brown University is committed to strengthening community-engaged research, teaching and partnerships that connect academic work with the knowledge, priorities and expertise of communities. The Office of Community Engagement, the Office of the Dean of the Faculty and the Swearer Center for Public Service, in collaboration with the Division of Research and the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, are offering this program to support academic departments seeking to develop or strengthen the integration of community-engaged research, teaching or partnerships.

Institutes, schools, programs and centers at Brown that hire faculty are also eligible to apply.

How to Apply

Interested teams should email their application to julie_plaut@brown.edu by 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2026. All applicants will be notified of decisions by Monday, Nov. 2, 2026.

Applications will be reviewed based on the clarity of the team’s goals and demonstrated commitment from team members and unit leadership. Priority will be given to proposals that align with Brown’s guiding principles for community engagement. Program organizers will also seek to build a cohort representing a range of academic disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences and STEM fields.
