Swearer Center for Public Service

Service-Focused Student Groups

There are many active student groups (undergraduate and graduate) on campus that engage with the broader Providence community.

Engaged Student Groups

Student Activities Office

Student registered as “S-Groups,” or Service Groups, with the Student Activities Office (SAO) at Brown offer a wonderful structure to engage with local organizations and schools on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with a group of like-minded peers.

The Swearer Center has a long-standing relationship with the Connect for Health, HOPE (Housing Advocacy), SHAPE (Sexual Health Education), OLEEP (Environmental Justice Education), and PAL (Adult Learning/Relationship Building) groups. Please note that some of these organizations require background checks or other clearance forms for engagement; please read our background and clearance checks to learn more about these processes.

Search Service Groups

Visit the Student Activities Office website to explore the complete list of student organizations, which includes both undergraduate and graduate groups. Use the filter function to search for registered Service groups.

Brown Tutoring Corps

Are you interested in building relationships with youth in the local community as a tutor and/or mentor? Join a growing community of 100+ of your peers by signing up for the Brown Tutoring Corps (BTC).

What is the Brown Tutoring Corps?

The Brown Tutoring Corps aims to provide adaptive and effective tutoring in the greater Providence area by preparing and connecting interested Brown students with various tutoring sites across the city, including but not limited to Providence public schools. This organization consists of multiple student groups that are joined administratively to streamline the recruitment and matching process for Brown students interested in tutoring, supporting the development of new educational partnerships in the area and supplementing existing partnerships.

Who runs the Brown Tutoring Corps?

The BTC was established by student leaders working in collaboration with the Annenberg Institute and the Swearer Center in the fall of 2022. There are multiple groups that are a part of the Brown Tutoring Corps, including FLIP (Free Learning in Place), the Providence Public Library tutoring group, SAT Prep, Beta Omega Chi, the Swearer Classroom Program, and Brown Elementary Afterschool Mentoring (BEAM).

There is a student administrative team that can be reached at browntutoringcorps@brown.edu.
