Through its Office of Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers, AAC&U promotes integrative global & civic learning through initiatives and practices that empower students to engage meaningfully and ethically with global challenges. In addition to conferences and institutes, it offers resources to support civic learning in the major and VALUE rubrics related to student learning outcomes, including civic engagement - local and global, intercultural knowledge and competence, teamwork, and problem solving.

​​​The American Council on Education (ACE) is a membership organization that mobilizes the higher education community to shape effective public policy and foster innovative, high-quality practice. ACE also administers the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, including the elective Community Engagement classification, which Brown received in 2020. President Paxson previously served on the ACE Board of Directors.

Campus Compact was founded in 1985 by Brown University president Howard R. Swearer and the presidents of Georgetown University and Stanford University, with Frank Newman of the Education Commission of the States. It envisions colleges and universities as vital agents and architects of a diverse democracy, committed to educating students for responsible citizenship in ways that both deepen their education and improve the quality of community life. Because of Brown’s membership, all faculty, staff and students at Brown have access to member events, rates and resources. Campus Compact typically organizes biannual national conferences and a national webinar series, as well as Affinity Networks; Brown is part of The Research University Civic Engagement Network (TRUCEN). The Swearer Center has also collaborated with Campus Compact on the Engaged Scholars Initiative and the two faculty-focused of its Impact Awards (nominations due in September).

CUMU is dedicated to its member institutions and to the creation and dissemination of knowledge on the issues that face our urban and metropolitan campuses and the communities we serve. Economic development and anchor partnerships as well as community engagement tend to be addressed in its annual conference, Barbara A. Holland Scholar-Administrator Award, other programs and Metropolitan Universities journal.

The mission of IARSLCE is to promote the development and dissemination of research on service-learning and community engagement internationally and across all levels of the education system. Brown is an Alliance Member, which carries benefits for anyone affiliated with the university. IARSLCE typically organizes an annual research conference and a webinar series, publishes a peer-reviewed online journal, the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning & Community Engagement, supports a Graduate Student Network and presents annual awards to individuals and institutions.

PBJN is a learning community committed to transforming higher education and communities by deconstructing systems of oppression through place-based community engagement. Place-based community engagement is defined by the PBJN as a long-term university-wide commitment to partner with local residents, organizations, and other leaders to focus equally on-campus and community impact within a clearly defined geographic area. Anyone affiliated with Brown may subscribe to its newsletter and participate in the network’s events, including interactive Peer Coaching Salons and Summer Institutes. The PBJN BIPOC Leadership Collective has also supported annual cohorts of fellows based on and off campus.

The Talloires Network of Engaged Universities is a global coalition of 431 university presidents, vice-chancellors and rectors in 86 countries who have publicly committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of their institutions. It is the largest international network focused particularly on university civic engagement, and it works to implement the principles of the Talloires Declaration, collaborating with communities and partners to confront societal challenges such as disease, famine, structural racism, gender oppression, economic inequality, climate change, and political polarization. The network supports the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, runs action research programs, organizes conferences and also keeps a list of conferences happening around the world.

Ashoka U is an international network of colleges and universities that envisions a world where every student acquires the skills, confidence, and motivation to create change for the good of all. Brown was recognized by Ashoka U as a Changemaker Campus, and faculty, staff and students can use the network’s resources on changemaker education and see session recordings from past Exchanges (including the 2014 Exchange at Brown).

This association unites expertise from educators, scientists, data managers, and others to power citizen science. In addition to an annual symposium, it provides resources including a Data Ethics Toolkit (developed with support from NSF) and guidance on platforms for participatory science projects.

Supported by the National Science Foundation, ARIS works with U.S. and international scientists and engagement practitioners to build capacity, advance scholarship, grow partnerships and provide resources (including a Broader Impacts Toolkit) to help them engage with and demonstrate the impact of research in their communities and society. Its activities include an annual summit and awards.

For 25 years, CCPH has promoted health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and academic institutions. It offers professional development, an extensive media library of past events, and partnership on significant initiatives, such as the NIH Community Engagement Alliance Consultative Resource (CEACR). Its publications include the Engaged Faculty Institute Curriculum (2015). 

The Imagining America consortium (IA) brings together scholars, artists, designers, humanists, and organizers to imagine, study, and enact a more just and liberatory ‘America’ and world. It supports a variety of fellowships, convenings and collaborative initiatives. The Brown Arts Initiative, the Pembroke Center, the Simmons Center and the Swearer Center were among the sponsors of Imagining America’s 2023 National Gathering in Providence.

Individual faculty at Brown participate in SSN, which aims to improve policy at every level of government. In addition to sharing expert commentary, interested faculty and others can access resources including media- and policy-focused how-to guides.
