Workshops and Community Storytelling Tours for improving community-engaged practice.

The Community-Engaged Learning Series offers workshops on community engagement principles, competencies and research, civic leadership, and civically engaged lives. It also offers Community Storytelling Tours that are free and open to all.

Co-Curricular Learning Areas

CE Principles
Principles, theories and concepts of community engagement

These workshops introduce participants to foundational concepts and theories related to community engagement. Workshops under this theme explore topics such as the definition of community, principles of asset-based community development, theories of social change and the importance of collaboration between communities and institutions.

CE Competencies
Skills, approaches, and behaviors of community engagement.

This category focuses on building the specific competencies and skills needed for successful community engagement work. Workshops may cover areas such as reflective practice, active listening and communication skills, conflict resolution, project management, and evaluation techniques to assess community impact.

Civic Leadership
Community visioning for collective change.

Civic leadership workshops are designed to develop participants' skills and knowledge in leading initiatives that promote positive change within communities. Topics covered may include understanding the role of leadership in civic engagement, effective communication and collaboration, advocacy and policy development, and strategies for mobilizing community members to address social issues.

CE Research
Collaborative solutions to community questions.

Workshops in this category focus on the principles and practices of conducting research in collaboration with communities. Participants learn about methods for co-creating research projects with community members, ethical considerations in community-based research, strategies for building trusting relationships with community partners, and ways to ensure research outputs benefit the communities involved.

Civically Engaged Lives
Sustaining professional and personal engagement (at and beyond Brown).

Workshops under this theme explore the broader implications of civic engagement on individuals' lives and society as a whole. Participants reflect on their personal values and motivations for engagement, explore ways to sustainably integrate civic responsibility into their personal and professional lives, and examine the impact of collective action on social justice, equity, and democracy.
